The Pensacola Music Teachers Association is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. Our members are professionally engaged in the teaching of music in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties in NW Florida. We have been serving Northwest Florida for over 60 years. PMTA is an affiliate of the Florida State Music Teachers Association and Music Teachers National Association. We advance excellent teaching, learning, and performance of music through seminars, master classes, festivals, concerts, and contests. We strive to raise and maintain the standards of music teaching, stimulate public interest in music, and encourage the study of music. We offer awareness and protection for members in ethical, governmental, and business matters.
Founded in the early 1950s, the Pensacola Music Teachers Association began through the vision and perseverance of Lucille Sellars, a Florida State University graduate and private piano teacher. At the request of the Dean of the FSU School of Music, Sellars helped organize a local association for music teachers in northwest Florida, laying the foundation for what would become PMTA.
After early challenges, the association gained momentum in the 1960s and continued to grow steadily in the decades that followed. PMTA expanded its mission by offering professional development for teachers and creating meaningful performance and educational opportunities for students. Over the years, PMTA has established many of its hallmark programs, including the Sonata Contest, Student Day, Concerto Contests, and the Fall Festival, while also sponsoring workshops, concerts, scholarships, and masterclasses. Today, PMTA remains committed to supporting music educators and enriching the lives of students throughout the Pensacola community.
